David A. Johnston

David A. Johnston, 88, died as quietly as he lived on February 17, 2018 with his wife, Jewel, of 63 years at his side. He was born on January 6, 1930 and grew up in Medford, MA. He was the son of the late H. Arnold Johnston and Annie Adams Johnston. David’s father was killed in an automobile accident when David was thirteen. He graduated from Medford High School and the family moved to Haverhill, MA. He attended and graduated from Boston University with a degree in Philosophy. He was drafted into the Army during the Korean War and after being honorably discharged, he graduated from the University of Alabama with a Master’s degree. David took a position with the Division of the Budget in New York based in Albany, New York, and after three years, was recruited as a Budget Analyst for the State of Ohio. The Division of the Budget loaned him to the Legislative Services Commission. During that time, he worked and went to school and received a PhD in Political Science from Ohio State University. David was named Assistant to the Director of LSC and subsequently became Director of the Legislative Services Commission. During that time, he was very involved in National Council of State Legislatures and was elected to Staff Vice-Chair in 1978-79. David retired from the LSC in 1986. He worked as a consultant in government for several years. One of the interesting places he was sent to work for the A.I.D. Foundation was Magnolia. David is preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Symons (Skip) of Ormond Beach, FL. He is survived by two sons, Mark (Trevia) of Ormond Beach, FL and David (Kathy) of Overton, Texas, a daughter, Diana Aufderhaar (Conrad) of Hilliard, Ohio, four grandchildren; David J. Johnston, Arlington, Texas, and Richard D. Johnston, Ormond Beach, Florida, Jason Aufderhaar (Allison) and Jennifer Brammer (Jason) all of Hilliard, Ohio, and four great-grandchildren.
