Dr. Remigio G. Lacsamana
Dr. Remigio (Remy) Garcia Lacsamana, 80, passed away peacefully on October 29 surrounded by his family. A native of the Philippines, Remy was born to Nicanor and Isabel Lacsamana on September 19, 1937 in the town of Minalin, Pampanga. The eldest of five children, Remy is predeceased by his parents, brother Nestor, and sister Lita.
After graduating salutatorian in 1954 from Tarlac High School, Remy enrolled in the College of Medicine at the University of Santo Tomas in Quezon City, graduating in 1963. Remy began his medical practice in Daytona Beach in 1969, where he practiced Internal Medicine until his retirement in 2001. Throughout his 32 years, Remy was an active and distinguished member of the Daytona Beach medical community. In the late 1970s, he was elected Chairman of the Department of Medicine at both Halifax Hospital and Humana Hospital. In recognition of his dedication to the medical establishment he was selected by his peers to be President of the Medical Staff at Halifax in 1984. In addition to this work, Remy was recognized for his writing and keen interest in medical journalism. In 1980, he was the founding editor of The Stethoscope, a quarterly publication that continues to this day, serving in this capacity for five years. He went on to become editor of the Journal of the Florida Medical Association, FMA Today, and served as President of the Volusia County Medical Society in 1995. His tireless dedication to the medical community was recognized in 2000 when he was awarded the Certificate of Merit, the highest honor given by the FMA to physicians who have rendered “exceptional and outstanding service to the FMA, the medical profession, and the public.” He was also recognized for being the first foreign medical graduate to edit two FMA publications in its more than 100-year history. Outside of work, Remy was a voracious reader, collecting books on a number of subjects as well as amassing an impressive collection of classical music. Finally, and most importantly, he was a loving, dedicated, and generous father, grandfather, brother and uncle who will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Remy is survived by his daughter Dr. Anne E. Lacsamana (Joyce) Clinton, NY; son Dr. Malcolm Gottlich (Kelli) Charleston, SC; former wife Gayle Lacsamana New Smyrna Beach, FL; two grandchildren Brett and Chase Gottlich; sister Lily Manolo (Sonny) Daly City, CA; brother Ricardo (Cleofe) Daly City, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Dale Woodward Funeral Homes, 167 Ridgewood Avenue, Holly Hill, FL 32117, on Friday November 3, 2017 at 11:00 AM. and the family will be receiving friends from 10:00 am until the time of the service.
