Don’t Make Major Decisions While Grieving

When we make choices, we need to have a clear head. Otherwise we could do more harm than good. We can make decisions with financial consequences we can’t afford. The decisions can be ones we can not undo. Sometimes we make the wrong decision out of excitement. We have bigger dreams than our reality can sustain. Other times we are just too tired to understand the details. Perhaps the most potent reasons we make the wrong major decision is grief and mourning.

When we lose a loved one, a great weight is placed upon our shoulders. Especially if we are the one who has to handle the details. We have to make all kinds of major decisions for the dearly departed. On top of that, we have our own choices that can come up. When someone impactful leaves our live, they leave holes in our life. Holes that make themselves known though our day to day lives.

Some people look to sell their home. They can’t stand the void left behind. Others have issues with how their work is handling their mourning. They look toward finding new employment. A few are ready to toss sentimental mementos. Ones that stir memories of the deceased. They are not ready to handle these memories. Making these decisions might seem like a good decision at the time.

Selling your home takes you away from a constant reminder. Does it cost more than you were ready for though? The same goes for your job. Our employers don’t always give us the respect we deserve. If you walk out though, will you find another job that pays the same? Being new you might get significantly less hours. The reasons these major decisions can go wrong are numerous. With a clear head, you can rationalize these decisions. Weigh the pros and the cons together. When in mourning, we can make these decisions with little to no consideration.

When making these major decisions, it is best to wait six months after the death of a loved one. That gives you ample time to mourn, cope, and get back to a stable state.
