Mathen, Richard H. 96, of Ormond Beach and Bunnell area passed away June 27, 2018 at Halifax Health Hospice Ormond. Born in St. Paul, MN Richard married Ida Mae Flory in Seattle Washington in 1942. When he was in the Navy he was a veteran of World War II. After moving to this area in 1958 he became owner/operator of A1 Auto Parts and several salvage yards in Volusia & Flagler Counties. He built VW and Chevy engines for racecars with his sons who raced local tracks. A fan of NASCAR he also enjoyed spending time with family and friends at the family lake house. Survivors include three sisters; Harriet Flory of CA, Joanna Sunburg of CA, and Lorraine Bass of MN; daughters Lois Cartwright of Ormond Beach, and Alice Howell of Bunnell; sons Billy Mathen (Mary Lou) of Bunnell, Tommy Mathen (Kathy) of Bunnell, and David Mathen (Thea) of Bunnell; grandchildren Debbie Cartwright of PA; Mike Harris of New Smyrna, Christina and Kent Corbin of Bunnell, Stacy and Kathy Mathen of Bunnell, Robert Jr. and Donna Mathen of New Smyrna, Joe and Sheryl Cartwright of Ormond Beach, Fred and Melody Cartwright of Ormond Beach, Rodney (Pam) Mathen of GA, William Mathen of Bunnell, Ty (Jennifer) Mathen of Tampa, Daniel (Jessica) Mathen of Bunnell, and Nicholas Mathen of Bunnell. Also numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by wife Ida Mae; son Robert G. Mathen; sister Linda Walters; and grandchildren Jessie Howell, Candice Harris, Frederick H. Cartwright, Case Mathen Cartwright, and Mistina Mathen.
A service will be held Saturday, July 14th at 3:00 at Dale Woodward Funeral Home 167 Ridgewood Ave. in Holly Hill. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either Halifax Health Hospice of Ormond Beach or Alzheimer’s Association.
