George William Lewis Jr.
George William Lewis Jr, son of George Lewis and Helen Harms passed away on May 6th at the age of 82. Husband of 55 years, father of 4, grandfather of 7 and great grandfather to 2, he is survived by wife Mary Eileen (Butler) Lewis and sons George III, Christopher and Timothy. Preceded in death by his daughter Susan Kathleen Lewis, and sisters Joanne Evans and Shirley Butler. George was a 17 year resident of Ormond Beach originally of the Chicago area who lived in Cleveland, Naperville IL and Vermontville MI. He was a US Navy veteran gaining on-the job training and skills there that led to a long and fulfilling telecommunications career to become a 30-year retiree of the Bell System. After retiring George continued as a consultant for AT&T and the DoD eventually turning to volunteering at the YMCA of the Rockies and exploring the Rocky Mountains on his days off. George loved the outdoors and mentoring others. He helped plan and lead numerous canoe, backpacking and camping trips with youth groups, family and friends locally, across the country and Canada. To relax, he loved playing horseshoes, bowling and golfing. He also sang with the Fall Singers and had been a church choir member and extraordinary minister. A Memorial Mass for George will be celebrated Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at 11am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Rev. Father Phil Egitto as celebrant. Visitation will be held prior to the Mass from 9am until the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lourdes Academy or Halifax Hospice.
