Obituary for Michael Thomas Smith

Michael Thomas Smith
Michael T. Smith, a resident of Deland, FL, formerly of Michigan, passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2018 in Deland. He was born March 2, 1953 in Pontiac, MI to Thomas L. and Laura J. Smith, both now deceased.
The second oldest of five children, Michael spent a great deal of time at First Baptist Church in Clarkston, MI and became a strong Christian at an early age. He developed his love of music while playing trumpet and listening to outdoor concerts at Pine Knob Music Theatre. After graduation from high school, he enjoyed talking with everyone while working in local grocery stores and restaurants. Michael was a hard worker when anyone needed help, and he never seemed to meet a stranger.
Michael lived in the Phoenix, AZ area for a short time, but eventually settled in Florida in 1989, where he lived closer to several siblings, and subsequently married his wife, Donna Marie, in 1993. After his wife passed away in 1999, Michael spent time with friends and family, and was an eager participant for whatever each day held.
Michael enjoyed music, and would often sing along with the music on the radio or at restaurants. He had an easy smile for whoever he met, and consistently appreciated and protected women. He approached life with simplicity, and never hesitated to share his faith with others. He enjoyed telling jokes, playing bingo and cards, and he loved eating out. He was a loyal friend, and would freely offer to share, if he noticed anyone was in need.
Michael is survived by two siblings, Rebecca A. Cairo (James), and Caroline S. Smith, as well as seven nieces and nephews.
Michael was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Marie, an older brother, Stephen L. Smith, and a younger brother, Richard A. Smith.
The family has entrusted Dale Woodward Funeral Home in Daytona Beach with final care.
Memorial Services will be officiated by Pastor Slade Rickels, Liberty Baptist Church, Deland, FL and will be held on Saturday, March 10, at 10:00 AM at University West, 545 W. Euclid Ave., Deland, FL.
